Looks like US 50 may be an option when the time comes. Its closed now because of snow, but in 2 weeks it might be open.

80 will put you even further north than the suggested detour...

I'm sure there are some small back roads around this that are a lot shorter, but they don't want to disclose because they can't handle the amount of traffic going through there. I have a cousin that travels that area frequently. I'll check and see if there is a shorter way around.

That's what I was thinking too. If we take 80 the whole way across, it will put us past the detour once we meet up with 70. My mapquest takes me across 80 saying its the shortest mileage wise, but I know parts of it is tolls.

I-80 doesn't meet up with I-70 according to the google map. Are you considering taking I-80 all the way to Salt Lake City and then 15 south from there? SLC is like 470 some miles away from Moab. Seems like it'd be way out of the way to me...unless I'm missing something on this google map.

Take 789 south just past rawlins on 80, it drops in on 80 just past glenwood springs.

You can take 80 to 76S and that becomes 70W...but I think that puts you on 70 before the road closure.

And that looks like the best route. The terrain is less difficult too, maybe James' 1500 won't be splodin.

Let me end this debate about directions. Take this route, it will be faster and you dont have to worry about shitty roads in Colorado. Your Welcome in advance!

March 11, 2010 Update (3:10pm):
CDOT crews have opened I-70 through Glenwood Canyon in both directions. *Traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction and will remain like this until long-term repairs can be completed in the coming weeks/months. *The speed limit has been reduced to 40 MPH and load over 14-feet wide are restricted from traveling through the work area. *CDOT wants to thank motorists and impacted communities for their patience during this time. More information to come tomorrow afternoon on repair plans.
