1996 ford psd. 177,000 miles I just replaced the glow plug relay and the glow plugs and it still is hard starting when it sits over night. It hasnt even been that cold out mid 20s and its still being a bitch in the morning. Any ideas?

My mothers truck did this, there was more to it than the glow plugs and relays but I don't remember. Hers is a 97 with over 200K on it now. I could ask her and see if she remembers what got replaced. Made a night and day difference.
I seem to remember something about the harness too. Can you test the plugs with them hooked up? See if they are getting the right juice? |

Brad that would be great if she remembers what it was. The harness looked to be i really good shape. I thought of changing it out but they were pretty expensive but at this point I guess it doesnt matter. I wasnt sure if the injectors could leak down and cause it to start hard. Every now and again I can smell fuel if its sits for a few days.

Um sure where the hell is the fuel block heater? Most work I have ever done getting into a diesel was doing the glow plugs in this truck.

I just did a glow plug relay and a fuel pump in one. the pump will leak out of a weep hole under the body of it and fill the valley pan up with fuel and drip down bw the trans and the motor.
double check power to the glow plugs. Also, dont use the glow plug light as a guide, use the volt meter. watch for it to kick on, pulling the voltage down, then the voltage will pick back up when they kick off. When its taht cold, they can run up to 2 min.

The heater will be in the fuel bowl under the filter. Located on top of the motor at the front.
I can find most anything on this site about these trucks http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/index.php I have read that even on harness that look good there can still be issues. Even different brands of glow plug relays. I assume that both batteries are up to snuff??? I have heard issues that if you have one that older than the other or dirty terminals the GP will not heat well or fast enough. |
